LIBGuides

LIBGuides have been created to assist you with your research.  A variety of resources have been arranged and categorized under a variety of different common research topics.  If you are doing research, this might be a good place to start. We have summarized which databases would be good for research in each subject. Be sure to also check out the ebooks at galepages.com/cana89207/ebooks.  If you need help finding any of the following resources in the Valor library, feel free to contact the staff.

Bible and Theology Courses

Academic Onefile, Gale Virtual Reference Library

The History tab in Academic Onefile has a section on Religious History. The Academic Onefile database also contains some materials from publications such as Journal of Biblical Literature and Harvard Theological Review, so you could consult this database when doing research for your Bible and theology classes with reasonable expectations of finding sources that help you. If at first you don't find what you are looking for, be sure to try the advanced search options.

Composition Courses

Academic Onefile, Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context, Global Issues in Context, Gale Virtual Reference Library

The Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context and Global Issues in Context would both be beneficial to the English Composition class. Both of these databases contain news, viewpoint articles, videos, and scholarly articles about a variety of different issues that come up in society (e.g. sexuality, politics, cultural issues). If you are given the assignment to write a paper or do a project on any issue facing the world, you are encouraged to consult either of these two databases.

The Gale Virtual Reference Library could also be a good resource for composition classes. It contains two eBooks: Encyclopedia of Major Marketing Strategies and Worldmark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices. EMMS is good for getting basic information on certain companies marketing strategies and famous brands. WERP is a good tool for getting essential information on various religious groups and sects.

General Education Courses

Academic Onefile, Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context, US History in Context, Gale Virtual Reference Library

The Academic Onefile database contains materials from a variety of academic disciplines. This would be a good resource to use in your general education classes. If at first you don't find what you are looking for, be sure to try the advanced search option. In Academic Onefile, you have the option to do one broad search or to browse by discipline. If you choose to browse by discipline, simply click on that discipline on the main page of Academic Onefile. The disciplines you can choose from are biology, chemistry, criminal justice, economics, environmental science, history, marketing, political science, and psychology.

The Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context and Global Issues in Context would be beneficial to the general education classes.

Students in the World History class will definitely find the database useful. However, this database could also prove beneficial to students in other general education classes, since topics from World History might come up in some assignments. If you're in a general education class, or any other class, and you need to do an assignment on a certain topic (e.g. immigration, globalization, child labor), it would probably be good to consult this database and research how that topic has been treated throughout history.

Music Courses

Academic Onefile

The Academic Onefile database has materials from publications such as the Journal of The American Musicological Society, Music & Letters, and American Harp Journal. Likewise, the US History in Context database contains some materials about church music, particularly as it relates to the history of the United States, though some materials on current music are included.

Evangelism and Missions

Academic Onefile, US History in Context, Opposing Viewpoints in Context, Global Issues in Context

The US History in Context database contains information on famous religious and evangelistic movements throughout history. There is information on the Puritans, The Great Awakening, Evangelicalism, and Pietism, among other topics. You could do research on how faith has shaped the United States as a nation.

Furthermore, the Opposing Viewpoints and Global Issues in Context databases would likely assist in these courses too, since they contain information about a variety of different cultures. People in evangelism and missions typically need to be well versed on different countries and cultures.

Business Courses

Gale Business Insights: Global, Academic Onefile

The Business Insights: Global database is a highly valuable tool in any business course. This database can provide you with scholarly articles, news, comparison charts, SWOT reports, company histories, industry information, financial reports, and investment reports. Examples include cost, labor unions, trade barriers, inflation, wages and salaries, economic development, competition, business cycles, and many others.
